Artist Zdzislaw Beksinski (24 February 1929 – 21 February 2005) was a renowned Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor. Beksiński executed his paintings and drawings either in what he called a ‘Baroque’ or a ‘Gothic’ manner. The first style is dominated by representation, with the best-known examples coming from his fantastic realism period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic, nightmarish environment. The second style is more abstract, being dominated by form, and is typified by Beksiński’s later paintings.

So, this is from Dolce & Gabbana’s 2013 collection. Let’s talk about the decision to re-purpose the racist imagery of the past as fashion for the future! While we’re talking about that, let’s also talk about the process from conception to execution for a collection which only images of black people as servants, and yet no actual black models were present on the runway. What does that thought process look like & how exactly will people try to spin this as harmless? Oh right, I’m certain any references to actual history will be met with the insistence that things are different now, and it just happens that the only black faces in this collection belong to images of slaves.

Quietly, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But if the US Environmental Protection Agency bans a major pesticide, we could save bees from extinction.

Four European countries have begun banning many of these poisons, and some bee populations are already recovering. But Bayer has lobbied hard to keep their main pesticide on the US market. The EPA has been slow to react, but an Avaaz petition with over a million signers helped force the agency to open a formal consultation to measure public support for action — and in 48 hours, the consultation closes. Let’s all act now and call on the EPA to put people before polluters and save our bees!

Bees don’t just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 90% of plants and crops — with an estimated $40bn value, over one-third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations — some bee species are already extinct and some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. Some studies claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals. But increasingly, independent research has produced strong evidence blaming neonicotinoid pesticides, forcing several European countries to ban one or more of these bee killers. But in the USA, Bayer’s poison is still unregulated.

This issue is now coming to the boil as major new studies have confirmed the scale of this problem. If we can get the EPA to act, we could shut down this attack on bees and our food supply. The real experts — the beekeepers and farmers — want these deadly pesticides prohibited until and unless we have solid, independent studies that show they are safe. It makes me feel very uncomfortable

You know what’s so uncomfortable about this? It shows that perhaps one of the most evil men in history, was a human being. That, on occasion, he could be nice, even flirty. That’s not all. You want to see evil people as evil, screaming horrible stuff over a desk with 20 microphones with 20, 000 people saluting them. The evil is clear and recognizable then. This shows a completely different image, it scares you because that means that evil isn’t a stereotype, that evil is not recognizable, that evil could be anyone. It scares you because this shows that could be lurking inside anyone and you’ll never ever know. Maybe in you?

One of the worse things you can do, is dehumanize people like Hitler. If people see him as a monster, they start to think that (normal) people are not capable of evil things.

We are all capable. It’s just a matter of in what circumstances.

Carmen Rupe: Why she kicks ass

She was a LGBT community pioneer, a performer, and mayoral candidate, who also was a prominent member of Agender, the New Zealand transgender group.

In 1957 she moved to Kings Cross and became the first Maori drag performer in Australia. She stripped, danced the hula, had two snakes, and joined the famous Les Girls revue.

She ran for mayor of Wellington in 1977 under the banner ‘Get in Behind’ promising gay marriage and legalized brothels.

In the 1950-60s, Carmen waited tables by day and worked the streets by night. In the pre-law reform days, police would pick trans sex workers off the streets, take them to the police station, hose them down and beat them. By the late ’90s, Carmen was the only surviving trans prostitute from that era.

In 1968, she returned to New Zealand, and opened Carmen’s International Coffee Lounge, a sexually tolerant place where GLBT people would meet for tea, coffee and much more. Because homosexuality was illegal, Carmen’s coffee lounge had an elaborate system of doors and stairways to allow patrons to escape discreetly if a police raid occurred.

“I had five bedrooms upstairs and turned it into a brothel. And so I always used to say to people, ‘tea and coffee downstairs but the sweets are upstairs’”.

Forty years later, even when her ailing health became a problem, she lead the Decade of the Diva float at Sydney’s Mardi Gras on her mobility scooter.
