THE BEAUTIFUL NIGHTMARES OF ZDZISLAW BEKSINSKI

Artist Zdzislaw Beksinski (24 February 1929 – 21 February 2005) was a renowned Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor. Beksiński executed his paintings and drawings either in what he called a ‘Baroque’ or a ‘Gothic’ manner. The first style is dominated by representation, with the best-known examples coming from his fantastic realism period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic, nightmarish environment. The second style is more abstract, being dominated by form, and is typified by Beksiński’s later paintings.

This is a resource post for all the Good White Persons out there. You know, the ones who say things like “It’s not my fault I’m white! Don’t generalize white people!”, or “I’m appreciating your culture! You should be proud!”, or “Why do you hate all white people, look I’m a special snowflake who’s not racist give me an award for meeting the minimum requirements for being a decent human being”.

Well, if you are actually interested in understanding racism and how it ties into cultural appropriation, please read instead of endlessly badgering PoCs on tumblr with your cliched, unoriginal arguments and repeating the same questions over and over.

On White Privilege
aka don’t blame me just because I’m white:

On Reverse Racism
aka you are being racist against white people:

On Cultural Appropriation
aka I’m just appreciating your culture:

Assorted Vials of White Tears and Miscellaneous Antidotes
aka I can’t change that I’m white/not all whites are racist/we are all humans:

Okay. I agree. I’ve been socially conditioned not to notice racism and recognize my privilege. What can I do?

I don’t care about this bullshit; you’re making a big deal out of nothing, go home and delete your blog:

Quality megapost.

This is really nice to have all in one place.

loopermovie:

This new Looper Animation is very, very special.

Zach Johnson (who did these painted posters) has made a gorgeous animation, by hand painting over 700 frames.  The gif above is pulled from it, but you need to see the whole thing.  I want every single one of them on my wall.  Check it out over at Apple Trailers.

Stop.

nuestrahermana:

take this moment to remember and acknowledge your own survival.

you’ve lived through many things and yet, you are here.

acknowledge and accept yourself for where you are (if possible.)

let us also remember those who didn’t survive

let us acknowledge & remember their strength and send them love.

let us acknowledge those of us who don’t feel strong, who don’t feel like survivors.

Acknowledge all of us; past, present, future.

These images are supposed to hearken back to Blackamoor images as decorative, but let’s look at what the term Blackamoor means.

blackamoor (plural blackamoors)

  1. (degrading) A person with dark skin, especially (but not necessarily) one from northern Africa  [quotations ▼]
  2. a blackamoor slave, a blackamoor servant; and hence any slave, servant, inferior, or child  [quotations ▼]
  3. (heraldry) a stylized Negro Argent, three blackamoors’ heads couped sable, capped or, fretty gules.

So, this is from Dolce & Gabbana’s 2013 collection. Let’s talk about the decision to  re-purpose the racist imagery of the past as fashion for the future! While we’re talking about that, let’s also talk about the process from conception to execution for a collection which only images of black people as servants, and yet no actual black models were present on the runway. What does that thought process look like & how exactly will people try to spin this as harmless? Oh right, I’m certain any references to actual history will be met with the insistence that things are different now, and it just happens that the only black faces in this collection belong to images of slaves.

what the fuck

Way to fuck it up D&G.

Petition for bees

latulatulatulatulautlatula:

Quietly, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But if the US Environmental Protection Agency bans a major pesticide, we could save bees from extinction

Four European countries have begun banning many of these poisons, and some bee populations are already recovering. But Bayer has lobbied hard to keep their main pesticide on the US market. The EPA has been slow to react, but an Avaaz petition with over a million signers helped force the agency to open a formal consultation to measure public support for action — and in 48 hours, the consultation closes. Let’s all act now and call on the EPA to put people before polluters and save our bees!

The pressure is working, and this is our best chance for impact in the fight for bee survival. Send an urgent message to the EPA at the link below— and we’ll formally submit it before the deadline on Tuesday!

http://www.avaaz.org/en/hope_for_bees_usa/?bctrMbb&v=18162

Bees don’t just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 90% of plants and crops — with an estimated $40bn value, over one-third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations — some bee species are already extinct and some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. Some studies claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease,  habitat loss and toxic chemicals. But increasingly, independent research has produced strong evidence blaming neonicotinoid pesticides, forcing several European countries to ban one or more of these bee killers. But in the USA, Bayer’s poison is still unregulated.

This issue is now coming to the boil as major new studies have confirmed the scale of this problem. If we can get the EPA to act, we could shut down this attack on bees and our food supply. The real experts — the beekeepers and farmers — want these deadly pesticides prohibited until and unless we have solid, independent studies that show they are safe. Let’s support them now — click to send a message to the EPA

http://www.avaaz.org/en/hope_for_bees_usa/?bctrMbb&v=18162

We can no longer leave our delicate food chain in the hands of research run by the chemical companies and the regulators that are in their pockets. Banning this pesticide will move us closer to a world safe for ourselves and the other species we care about and depend on. With hope,

Iain, Antonia, Mia, Luis, Ricken, Stephanie, Pascal, Alice, Ari and the whole Avaaz team
